Snow Day Crochet

Tuesday, March 3rd, 2009

Yesterday was my first grown up snow day.  The office was closed due to the “inclement weather” and I couldnt’ have been happier.  I parked myself on the couch with some coffee and yarn, and watched Sense and Sensibility.  I had no intention of going anywhere until the next day.

Alas, the man had stayed home sick, and by late afternoon I knew I had to get out of the house.  I needed to escape his nasty cough for a bit.  So on my snow day, I braved the frigid weather, hopped on the F train, and got myself to The Point for some Monday Crochet.

I was in the company of the four lovely ladies mentioned in the last post.  I worked on the Short and Sweet Bolero, and made some good progress.  Christeen worked on a scarf for her grandmother.  Aly & Katie did some more practice – they are both definitely hooked on the hook by the way… And Stephanie was knitting a baby blankie.

Of course, it was well worth the trip in to the city.  And I’m already looking forward to the next one.  Plus, I’ve got my eye on some gorgeous multicolored yarn… I don’t have something specific in mind yet, but I’m going to go ahead and say I deserve it anyway.

Hoping I can show you a finished (and wearable) bolero soon!

Monday Margarita... Tasty!

Monday Margarita... Tasty!

This Monday we learned that Monday Crochet sometimes turns into Monday Margaritas.

We stopped at Cabrito Mexican Restaurant and Bar after work, intending to grab a quick drink before heading over to The Point.

Of course one drink turned into 3 rounds and a guacamole platter.  :)

Though we never made it to The Point, we thoroughly enjoyed our excursion to Cabrito.  The company was good, as were the chips.  And I for one, crocheted on the way home.

Monday, Monday…

Tonight I was in a bit of a rut, so decided to whip out the trusty Pretty Puffs Slouch Hat pattern, and make myself a hat but without the puffs.  I realize now what a wise decision that was.  You see, I then spent a good hour and a half “in the zone” – stitching round after round after round with no desire to stop. I wasn’t in a crochet trance (that happens) but it felt methodical, good…  I chatted a bit with Christeen and Stephanie (the knitter who we are pleased to have crashing Monday Crochet)… and sipped the last drops of my chamomile tea (which is quite tasty at The Point!)

I did have to put down my hook at 8pm, aka closing time.  But that was really okay – we needed some food.  So, we tried Noodle Bar, which is just down the street from the knitting cafe.  I filled my belly with some fabulous shrimp wonton and went home very happy (to finish my hat).

Such good things… even on a Monday!

1st Monday Crochet

The Point, NYC

We met at The Point Knitting Cafe in Greenwich Village for our first official Monday Crochet. We made ourselves comfy at a small table towards the back of the store, where we could crochet surrounded by walls of beautiful yarn.

We were a bit slow to start working on this pattern for “fingerless mittens” or wrist warmers as we like to call them. We couldn’t help but be distracted by our lovely new environment which included a cafe full of treats. There was also a knitting class gathering behind us, which was very nice background noise. Eventually though, we settled down, stopped touching any yarn within arm’s length, and got down to business. We consulted The Bible (aka Debbie Stoller’s The Happy Hooker) to clear up some confusion on the pattern and we were on our way. Sort of.

Turns out, I was following the pattern incorrectly. So we both unraveled our rows (Christeen doing so for “solidarity purposes”) and started anew. Fueled by the delicious espresso drinks and our mad desire to crochet like pros, we plowed on, completing as many rows as we could before The Point closed it’s doors all too soon at 8pm.

We parted ways then but naturally continued working on our wrist warmers on our own. I completed one glove before turning in for the night, though I didn’t weave in the ends etc.

I’m happy with the way it came out, generally. We both agreed the bottom row came out a bit funky and believe there is a special trick we need to master in order to conquer that. We’ll hopefully take care of that this week and try something new for the next Monday Crochet.
